Established in 2024, the Guereza Reforestation Project is a conservation initiative by Guereza Canopy Lodge dedicated to restoring indigenous tree cover along the edges of Kibale National Park around Kihoima.

The project responds to growing pressures on the forest landscape, including agricultural encroachment, deforestation, fragmented wildlife habitats, declining wildlife feeding areas and human-wildlife conflict. More than 1,000 indigenous trees have already been planted, with particular attention given to indigenous species that contribute to the natural ecology of Kibale and provide food, shelter and movement corridors for chimpanzees, monkeys, forest birds and other wildlife.

Beyond restoring forest cover, the project seeks to create a stronger green buffer between the national park and surrounding human activity. As the trees mature, they will contribute to carbon sequestration, environmental restoration, biodiversity conservation and the gradual expansion of habitat available to wildlife.

Implemented by Guereza Canopy Lodge with the support of local communities, guests and conservation partners, the project also creates opportunities for environmental education, employment and alternative livelihoods while encouraging greater community stewardship of the forest.

Guests can become part of this conservation journey by sponsoring a tree. Each sponsored tree is assigned a unique code through which its progress can be followed, with photographic updates available over time. Guests may also select a tree according to the characteristics traditionally associated with its species; creating a personal connection between individual character and the living forest.
